Body & Soul!

36' x 48'
Grand Rapids, MI
2021

In a modernized world of grocery stores, air conditioning, and desk jobs, it can be easy to forget that we are physical beings. We are bodies that experience exhaustion, exposure, hunger, and age.  At the same time, our self awareness grants us a feeling of being set apart; different, somehow, from the rest of our environment, resulting in the concept of the soul.

The result is the infamous body-mind problem that philosophers have argued over for ages. Can individual behavior, social anxieties, relationship patterns, political structures all be explained by physical motivation—hunger, companionship, survival? Or is there genuinely something greater than the sum of our parts?

This 4 story mural explores these questions in the midst of a busy downtown neighborhood, encouraging onlookers to pause and find a moment of contemplation, wonder, and gratitude.
