Mangroves!
64' x 24'
Key West, FL
2024
This design celebrates community, mutual aid, and environmental awareness through the illustration of three interconnected species:
1. Red Mangroves play a critical role in the local ecosystem by holding together much of the Keys and the Florida coastline.
2. Florida Honeybees, the mangroves’ primary pollinator, is a highly communal species. Alongside humans, honeybees have the most organized and effective societies of any animal.
3. Humanity is represented in this design by homes, a ladder, and two figures helping each other. This imagery illustrates the way that Keys residents band together to rebuild their communities after seasonal hurricanes.
None of these three species could survive on their own; they are all intimately connected in the delicate ecosystem of the Florida Keys.
