This mural, based on a sunset I saw at Sleeping Bear Dunes, is about how Michigan summer feels like a portal into another dimension. In the heat of high summer, heaven sinks so low that it touches down to earth, right around Manistee. Those leathery old rockhounds—with the wet jeans and lit cigarettes—are archangels, hunting for beach glass and Petoskey stones right alongside the rest of us!
